I founded Sara.ai Books to publish children’s books, educational tools and children’s voices. I want children’s voices to be heard and supported by a professional editor as children’s voices are typically unheard by publishers. Adults control the plots of nearly all children’s books and child characters are primarily used as methods, tools, backdrops to express adult views and opinions. My debut novel, Sara and the Pooka, is one stepping stone on a path I’m laying for frustration-free early childhood literacy. At age 5 my daughter was a more avid reader of fiction than I have ever been. Reading has never been an easy pastime for me, like it is for her. I can clearly see how empowering it has been for her. I’m thrilled that Sara and the Pooka won a 2018 Moonbeam Award for Literacy. The Moonbeam awards are dedicated to the notion that reading to and with your children will inspire them to become lifelong readers and learners. It’s up to us to help kids fall in love with reading and writing. We pass on the technology of literacy through our actions, as with any social practice.
